Discussion

James (Jim) Davis Apr 8, 2008:
You too.
Raffaella Panigada Apr 8, 2008:
Sure I was not questioning the suggestions, just the interpretation that sparked them. The bit I removed is there but it's between commas (one missing), so it's a clarification useful but not necessary to the completeness of the sentence. Have a nice day
James (Jim) Davis Apr 8, 2008:
If you remove them, but they are there in the text and they have an effect. It is all these little monsters that need protection, the environment is only a means. Anyway my offering is as open to interpretation in exactly the same way as the Italian.
Raffaella Panigada Apr 8, 2008:
I'll get back to this when my "monsters" are at school! (How did you guess? ;-))
Raffaella Panigada Apr 8, 2008:
But if you remove the examples I think it only makes sense with environment: "Specie di tutti i gruppi zoologici e di tutte le dimensioni popolano questi ambienti tanto perfetti quanto fragili e la cui protezione passa anche attraverso la nostra..."
James (Jim) Davis Apr 8, 2008:
Hi Raff, without even more context... It is the "e" in "e la cui protezione" which seems to distance it a bit. But the logic works with both interpretations, so it doesn't matter much. How are the kid(s?), getting you up early? ;-)
Raffaella Panigada Apr 8, 2008:
Reading some of the other suggestions I see some have interpreted that "cui" as referring to "species" but I really think it refers to the environment/habitat, perfect but fragile and depending on us to "survive". Am I the only one reading it this way?
