: The meaning and right translation is purchase here, but I wouldn't say "acquisire means to buy", I would say it means to acquire.

: Jim's right though: "acquisire" means "to acquire" – a wider semantic field than just "to buy" – "acquistare". But that's academic: your "purchase" takes care of it all. In Dckensian they used to write "got(ten) to order":

ti devo dire che il dubbio mi resta :)
non mi è chiaro chi sia il soggetto
per me si tratta di made to order ma, che dire, il verbo usato e quello..
usually you may find:
ordine/lavoro acquisito su commessa (as you mentioned it would then be manufatured to order, upon customer specifications)
or
acquisti su commessa - which refers to material purchased not for inventory but to manufacture specific jobs
or finally
form the point of view of the buyer:
the purchase of a customized product (purchased to order), but in Italian you would probably not say "prodotto/i acquisito su commessa, which in fact googles almost nothing.
I believe "order" is implied here and then the first meaning would apply.
