Beh, allora penso che l'ideale sarebbe mettere solo "A real gent!" che ad un madre lingua dà il senso perfettamente e tra l'altro suona più ironico proprio per il fatto di così sintetico.

O anche solo, "what a gentleman!". Rigirando invece la frase per mettere l'espressione ironica all'inizio (che secondo me funziona ugualmente perché crea aspettative poi totalmente disattese), potresti anche dire: "Being the gentleman that he was...". HTH
