This is how it works in Lombardy My 10-year-old daughter still goes to her "visita pediatrica ad età filtro" every few years, and will have to do so until she is 14 years of age. We live in Lombardy (Italy), but I think this happens also in other regions. Just after birth, my child was given a special 'health booklet' containing several pages, one for each compulsory paediatric visit, where the paediatrician writes down the relevant notes about my child's weight, height and general health status after each visit, and then sends the lower part of the sheet (which is detacheable) to the SSN (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale - National Health Service) for reimbursement of his/her services, since the visits are free of charge for the families. The first few visits need to take place within a few days/weeks/months of each other, but as the child gets older, they get more few and far between. On every page of the booklet is the header: "visita pediatrica ad età filtro", and the age is mentioned just below.

So, I believe the term the asker refers to is generic, and not only referred to newborns (although the child's age is specified on every visit sheet). Hope it helps.
