Italian term

sala capitolare

Italian to English Art/Literary Architecture Venice guide book/ Scuola Grande di San Rocco
...
OK, if this were a monastery or church (it isn't), I would probably translate as "chapter house". The glossary has "capitular room", which I'm not sure I believe in this context, and my current best theory is for "upper hall" (the English Wikipedia uses this too, and it appears consistent with the author's definition, which is: "La Sala Capitolare delle Scuole Veneziane aveva un uso misto, sia religioso, officiare funzioni, sia prettamente sociale per riunirsi e discutere").
...
TIA :)

Oops Didn't realise this was still open. Thanks to all for contributing; the publisher went with 'upper hall', if memory serves.

if you link through to the Italian version of the same page, it confirms this: http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sala_capitolare

Yes, OK, in my rush I didn't see your note (blush, blush). I'd still go for chapter house, though. The Scuole Veneziane were pretty much religious societies if I remember well

capitular hall

Also known as "Sala del Capitolo" and it has ancient origins, see
