Italian term

centri commerciali vs outlet

Non-PRO Italian to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
grazie

Cedric Randolph Mar 1, 2010:
wooster woorster worsted wool, make mine a double, have a pull, Sir.
Tom in London Mar 1, 2010:
Jeeves I think you may mean "Wooster", Sir.
Cedric Randolph Mar 1, 2010:
Better bister than worster (that bloody mary pepper sauce aka worcester)
Tom in London Mar 1, 2010:
Convinced I think Russell has convinced me with his link to Bicester OUtlet Village. Now if someone could explain why "Bicester" is pronounced "Bister"........
luskie (asker) Mar 1, 2010:
luskie (asker) Mar 1, 2010:
tom autlet in italian (autelette for friends) is ref. either to a single outlet store (one specific brand) or to an outlet village/outlet centre/outlet that groups many different brands. but, just like bad girls, cheap second-quality clothes go everywhere, so you'd better stick to your habits ;)
Tom in London Feb 28, 2010:
Maybe Could be, Sonia - I'm probably shopping in the wrong places :)
Sonia Hill Feb 28, 2010:
outlet village Tom, there is definitely an "outlet village" near Swindon, and I'm sure there are quite a few others around the UK. They sell cut price designer clothes.
Cedric Randolph Feb 28, 2010:
outlets Actually, there are quite a few outlet villages being built, with that name, all over Europe and N. Africa. The term is now being incorporated into Int. Eng., and it is specifically used as explained in my answer. Look under MAPIC, which is one of the major meetings for the builders and retail occupants of these and regular shopping centres.
Tom in London Feb 28, 2010:
outlet pronounced "autelette" is an Italian word. There is an English word "outlet" but its meaning is completely different from the meaning of "autelette", which is a type of shop that doesn't exist here in the UK (or if it does I've never seen one). So I don't think there is an English translation of "autelette". It's a big shed containing stalls selling cheap second-quality clothes (nothing else). In the UK that would just be a "remaindered clothes market" or something.....

shopping centres vs brand name outlet "villages"

Yes, but the outlet store is usually linked directly to a major brand name or company, and the "outlet village" is a large grouping of these stores in a mall setting, while simple shopping centres have generic department stores and shops that do not particularly specialise in name brands and may be large malls or small groupings as with a supermarket as its hub. One of my best clients builds outlet villages so I have a little bit of experience in the field.

'shopping centre' or 'retail centre' vs outlet centre

I'm sorry to disagree with Tom (discussion) but in my experience 'outlet centre' is a common and well understood term in the UK. There are many of these complexes/villages around the UK, grouping a number of individual outlets with restaurants, cinemas (sometimes) and other facilities. The shops sell goods, which are usually ends of lines or seconds, at reduced prices, as described by Cedric. See the web references below. The term can also be used to describe an individual shop (e.g. 'the Timberland outlet') which may not be part of a 'village'. 'Shopping centre' or 'retail centre' describes a similar grouping of shops which sell at 'regular' prices.

shopping malls vs. outlets

SHOPPING MALL(S): large indoor complexes which include shops, stores, some small kiosks, fast food and non alcoholic drinks vendors; they provide close, covered and non covered large parking areas calculated on the basis of the area that the mall is, optimally, serving. Generally easy to access from main arteries, freeways and highways.
Malls are the favorite hangouts of teen-agers. They are the places to see and be seen.
Shoplifting rate is high.
Security services are provided throughout the mall during and after business hours.
OUTLETS: Medium to large complexes of shops (brand name products) selling discountinued or sample merchandise at, supposedly, lower prices. In fact, generally speaking, they have very few, if any, bargains. The discount they apply is on the Suggested Manufacturer Retail Price which any respectable shop will usually beat during a store sale.
The complexes have fast food and non-alcoholic drink related vendors. They are usually easy to reach from main arteries, freeways, or highways but tend to be on the outskirt of towns as to not compete with malls.
Teen-agers are not frequent visitors, but their parents and turists are.
Shoplifting rate is quite lower than malls.
Security is not provided but they are served, on call, by the local Police Department or County Sheriff department.

Hello everyone.
All your comments are appreciated.
Unfortunately there was no mention (except for the word 'italiano') that the request was continent-specific. I provided general info according to what I perceived as a general request to common usage of the terms in the US.
