Quando Tenet fu defenestrato, la Casa Bianca gli attribuì due colpe: di avere spinto il presidente al conflitto affermando che sarebbe stato un «slam dunk» o canestro facile, e di aver segnalato che Saddam Hussein aveva cercato di procurarsi uranio per l' atomica dal Niger. Ma per l' ex direttore della Cia la responsabilità dello scandalo del Niger fu dell' allora consigliere della sicurezza «Condi» Rice. Mentre il termine «slam dunk» sarebbe stato usato per spiegare quanto sarebbe stato facile convincere gli americani della necessità della guerra.
