(big) tear
I see somebody's written something now, but strappone comes from from strappo (tear/rip), you couldn't put..
'..the millenium's financial tearing of/at the seams...', or something along those lines I'd think

Note from asker:
Yeah, my first guess was "the big rip-off" but that didn't entirely make sense in context, so I though I'd better ask the question. Nice try though....getting warmer.... |

Comment: "You were miles off but by rejecting your suggestion, I found the right direction. In the end I translated it as "binge"."

(big) burst
Are they referring to the ecomomic boom of the nineties?

strap

Puoi quindi aggiungere un aggettivo tipo great "the great strap" o quello che tu sceglierai meglio di me!

punishing/frantic run-up (to the Millennium)
The expression comes from cycling, where a "strappo" is an uphill stretch that requires serious pedalling and a "strappone" is even steeper.
You'll find "strappo", "strappetto" and "strappone" in the web reference.
It is widely used in also other sectors, though, such as politics, and how you translate it will depend on the register of the rest of your text.
