Discussion

Joel Schaefer Aug 24, 2010:
I'm with Giles: It is a "base wine" after all! vino base + polpa
Giles Watson Aug 24, 2010:
All's well that end's well Your new example is evidently a "base wine".

At least you've got it cleared up now ;-)
Carl Stoll (asker) Aug 24, 2010:
I made a mistake.
Joel Schaefer Aug 23, 2010:
Substrate? No, only if you're adding flavors, like making vermouth. Higher quality wine (la linea selezione) is not made by adding more stuff to it.

entry-level wine/entry label

"Vino base" here has more to do with marketing than wine. Sara's "entry-label wine" is a possibility but "entry label" is usually a noun phrase on its own, not an attributive.

In winespeak, the term "base wine" refers to a wine that will undergo further processing, such as fortification or refermentation, but that doesn't seem to be the case here.

Peer comment(s):

agree Colin Ryan (X) : I'm agreeing because of the linguistic point Giles is making - "partendo da" here doesn't mean that the winery adds stuff to the "vino base", it means that that is the "bottom of the range"

table wine

this is what it seems to mean to me. Most wineries have a variety of wines they sell, from the base stuff at 11.5% sold in bulk, table wine, to a little higher quality bulk wine, to bottled vintage to reserves and special blends, like a Tignanello. I could be wrong but my instinct says this is what is meant.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Joel Schaefer : Table wine is something to drink with a meal, as distinguished from dessert wine or fortified wine. Table wine doesn't really connote lower quality the way vin de table does.

disagree Sara Bollati : disagree, table wine is a type of wine different to what indicated in this sentence

value wine

Or basic wine: the less expensive wines produced by this winery.
Peer comment(s):

agree Mr Murray (X) : I'd easily go with 'basic wine' ... so if 'value wine' is an equivalent. 'basic' gives the idea of both 'entry level' and 'low cost' - I've had low cost wines that weren't entry level and entry level wines that weren't low cost. Basic suggests both to me.

entry label wine

entry label is the basic wine produced by a certain winery. This is usually made with grapes coming for a variety of vineyards, areas, or from the same vineyard but different bins. The opposite of entry label wines are reserve, cru, etc.
Table wine is vino da tavola.
