note I am referring purely to production and testingNOT to useJust in case there are differences between the twoFor example, I know that the term units is frequently used when talking about the consumption of pharmaceuticals.

pieces

or even units. In my opinion items is something different, more "articoli".

neutral esoft : I would stay away from "units" because of possible implications with International Units....

number of packs

I think in this case the text may be referring to the fact that by virtue of process manufacturing a "batch of ingredients" has now been distributed into countable items.

Note, I would stay away from using "units" because of the implications with "International Units" a standard way to measure the quantity of formula in the pharmaceutical product.

Also, I would not mention "size" as in process manufacturing, batch size is the volume/weight of the formula prior to packaging

units

I would call them units

Qty/Quantity

Just another idea - where I've seen 'No. pezzi' on Italian packaging (tablets, etc.) I would have translated it as "Qty" - e.g. "Qty. 20" in English.
