James (Jim) Davis Aug 4, 2009:
difference between... The legal guardians of most children are their parents, and this can only be changed by a court, so the term "guardian" is normally only used for those guardians who are not the parents, while parents are usually referrred to as such.

difference between guardian and patria potestas http://definitions.uslegal.com/g/guardianship/ (the guardian has to be appointed by a court)

as the legal guardian of the participant

I speak as a former social worker, and I have pretty clear ideas about this, having unfortunately removed children from the care (and legal guardianship) of their parents.

As wiki explains:
"Most countries and states have laws that provide that the parents of a minor child are the legal guardians of that child, and that the parents can designate who shall become the child's legal guardian in the event of death."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_guardian

This is quite clear. It is legal language (io sottoscritto). Most parents are the legal guardians of their children, but not always and if you are not the legal guardian of your child, then you cannot enrol your child.

acting in loco parentis of the participant

One way of putting it
Peer comment(s):

disagree Simon Charass : “in loco parentis” means for the absent/dead parents.

agree Simon Charass : Leaving it in Latin in a legal document seams to be the best solution.

parent

this is an application form, for goodness sake, not a commercial contract! In English, you would simply put 'parent or guardian', but seeing as it says later on 'mio figlio', parent will do. There would be absolutely no need to add the legalese in this kind of document. It's not just a question of translating the term, it's also a matter of cultural usage.
