nurturing/caring

fits well. In the standard anthropological dichotomy "culture-nurture", the father was responsible for inculcating "culture" (norms) while the mother was on the nurturing and nourishing side. Now daddies have softened up and became caring touchy-feely too. As for the norms... the've got substituted with appetites and the fear of legal persecution :)))

thanks Janice
agree James (Jim) Davis : Having studied child development many years ago I would say "caring" is probably best.

yep, that's what Piaget always used. However, I love the cultural tongue-in-cheek implicit in nurturing, in this context. A nurturing daddy... That's me, by the way! E me ne vanto!

attentive / involved

I think "attentive" would work (and seems to be used in this context). But you could opt for "involved" perhaps, though may alter the nuance a little.

"...Quindi si passa da un padre-padrone a un padre accuditivo.
Questa nuova tipologia di padre, spiega il Professor Charmet, vuole contribuire a costruire una relazione forte col figlio per sviluppare un sè personale e autentico e contribuire al suo raggiungimento della felicità."

Thank you.
neutral Michael Korovkin : good responsible fathers have always been attentive and involved; it's that now they are attentive and involved in a rather "feminine" way. Which, for the record, is fine with me... :)

disagree James (Jim) Davis : The ethical rule giving Freudian father was attentive too. The technical term here is "care".
