There are various different types of hoods used in chemistry/mol.biol.
A Fume Hood is used to extract harmful vapours when working with dangerous chemicals.
A Laminal Flow Hood is used for bacterial containment, and avoiding contamination of other biological samples.
The former uses a simple straight forward suction system to remove harmful vapours, the latter uses a complex air flow structure to keep nasties in/out depending on the actual application.
Also known as "Laminar flow cabinet"
