I cant find the word in any of my dictionaries, and while I guess its a relation of 'aulico', i really can't understand how it fits into the context: 'courtliness' just doesn't make any sense...

Context: description of a painter's work and the misleading nature of texts incorporated into his paintings...

Hi, everyone. Just to apologize for the delay in grading... wanted to check it out with the painter first. Thanks for all your suggestions. In the end, Umberto came closest. After all that though, the artist decided he didn't like the word or even agree with the concept of 'aulicita' in the context of his work and got the writer to rewrite the whole paragraph!!

The works are ofter tongue in cheek so are not necessarily 'solemn' ... perhaps the idea here is 'seriousness' in this sense of intellectual/conceptual content??

sublime quality of the work of art

Of course 'aulicità' has broader connotations in this context and my impression here is that the term is being used to refer to the almost 'sacred' or 'sublime' nature of the work of art and contrasted with the desecrating verbal language incorporated in the paintings.

I assume the painter doesn't want his audience to treat the work of art reverentially, hence the reference to 'aulico' which normally is associated to a grand, lofty and sublime style.

In the end, the painter asked the writer to rewrite the paragraph as it seems she had misinterpreted his art. Pity he hadn't paid more attention to the content before sending me the translation... a lot of time wasted by all... a big thanks, anyway!"

"aulicita'" being the characteristic of being "aulico", i.e. formal, highbrow, solemn, etc.

I think this is a good translation of "aulicità" and probably fits the intentions of the writer.
