small porphyry slabs/paving stones
Declined
All the references to "smolleri" on the web seem to be Italian sites. However, sites with English versions describe it as "small porphyry slabs" to which there are numerable references on the UK web.
"We have over the years used both Italian and German Porphyry in a variety of locations . This is an extremely good stone for exterior use as it is a volcanic stone with a natural cleaving plane . This gives a good even surface ..."
"Porphyry Cobblestone - Genuine European cobblestone. The Ancient appeal of this Italian stone makes porphyry a very coveted material for cobblestones. It is known for its purplish, warm earthy tone that enhances and environment. Harder than marble or granite, porphyry resists wear, discoloration and staining which makes it ideal for driveways. Its natural surface resists slipping and is less likely to crack, chip or crumble in freezing weather..." http://bourgetbros.com/flagstone/cobbles_porphyry.htm (shows a picture)
"For slopes and garage flooring smolleri are the most suitable material, thanks to the anti-slid qualities of porphyry"
In the 20s and 30s coarse tiles or smolleri began to be used to cover sloping surfaces in many mountain italian villages in Trentino, Lombardy and Veneto.
