Recent research indicates that in some—although not all—individuals, excess fat accumulation alters adipocytes and surrounding tissues. One result of this is inflammation, which is thought to be a key reason that obesity predisposes to metabolic diseases. Microscopically, cellulite involves gender specific changes in subcutaneous adipose tissue architecture characterized by excess fat, alterations of the microcirculation and lymphatics and fibrosis. The adipocytes in cellulite may express more genes of “deleterious” mediators and less of those coding for oxidative “fuel metabolism”.
