worked, and the parts they are constructed from, was becoming a
matter for close attention. A cluster of new questions surrounds written
documents by the end of the seventeenth century; mostly they focus
on questions of identity. How can we ensure that documents are
what they purport to be? How can we guarantee accurate and effective
record-keeping? Who wrote this document and when? What rights
attach to that AUTORSHIP?
