Primary school lasts for six years leading to the Certificat d'Etudes primaires (CEP). Pupils then go on to secondary education (general or technical) which consists of one cycle lasting for six years after which they obtain the Diplôme d'Etat d'Etudes Secondaires du Cycle Long which gives access to higher education at university and technical institute levels. Pupils can also begin short technical courses in trade and crafts at age 12. Those who complete the long cycle in a technical field and pass the Examen d'Etat are eligible for admission to higher education. Vocational education is provided by vocational schools and courses last for four or five years. It does not give admission to higher education.
