Spanish term or phrase: Literatura de la realidad
Hi there, I'm having trouble defining this genre.

This is the definition:

Obras que novelan y/o fabulan a partir de biografías de personajes reales conocidos, o situaciones documentadas de la realidad internacional.

If anyone has a suggestion, I'd love to hear it. Thanks!

historical fiction literature / non-fiction novel

Explanation:
A couple of contenders here, though I think it's rather difficult to pin down to one or the other unless you know the context, although if pushed I'd go for "historical fiction literature."

"Historical fiction is a literary genre in which the plot takes place in a setting related to the past events, but is fictional. Although the term is commonly used as a synonym for historical fiction literature, it can also be applied to other types of narrative, including theatre, opera, cinema, and television, as well as video games and graphic novels."

"The non-fiction novel is a literary genre which, broadly speaking, depicts real historical figures and actual events woven together with fictitious conversations and uses the storytelling techniques of fiction. The non-fiction novel is an otherwise loosely defined and flexible genre. The genre is sometimes referred to using the slang term "faction", a portmanteau of the words fact and fiction."

Notes to answerer
Asker: So, it didn't occur to me to mention this when I asked my question but "historical novel" is a different section of this text, so I can't use the same name. Maybe non-fiction novel... Thank you!

neutral  philgoddard: "Fiction literature" is a tautology, and it doesn't have to be historical - I could write a novel about Joe Biden. And "nonfiction novel" sounds like a contradiction to me.//I always reply if I feel it adds anything to the conversation!

-> I could make so many counterarguments, but why bother, you never reply.//I don't think that's ever been my experience, but fair enough, I'll reply in the discussion box.

reality-based fiction

Explanation:
Fiction based on certain real-life incidents, or actual people, with some made-up names and details. These made-up details are what differentiates reality-based fiction from creative non-fiction.
