Online search in CAT tools Iniziatore argomento: AlisaIWW

Hello, a question to all: does any of the popular CATs have this function? I am talking about something similar to what certain extensions (the names of which elude me now) do in Open Office and in FireFox: a right-hand click on a selected word opens a customizable context menu of online search engines, which can obviously include dictionaries and encyclopedias. Thank you all in advance.

Well, WFC has it. OmegaT doesn't. But even so, you can easily set up your browser to do multiple searches with bookmarklets, so why not just use your browser? If you use the CAT's built-in function, you are limited to the types of searches (and the number of different searches) that the CAT tool can do.

what is WFC?:-)
I do use it in FF all the time (not bookmarklets, but that extension I mentioned). The advantage of having it built into the CAT is that I don't have to copy and paste from it into the browser. Now I do see that there is something I am missing here - what is it? Oh, and you are right, of course, the context menu in the CAT would have to be customizable - like I said, it is in both OO and FF.

WFC is Wordfast Classic but I use the freeware IntelliWebSearch for all my searches.

These two combined are a godsend. The annoyance is, like I said, is the constant copy-paste and switching windows. The extension in OO (which I no longer use, and so don't have the name) lets you customize the search-engine menu. You then just select the word and hit 'search the web' or something along these lines. Gerard, is that what IntelliWebSearch does? ▲ Collapse
A few tools exist... | Sep 23, 2009 |
I belive OmegaT has a script called Ondiloto. CafeTran has this function built in, also IntelliWebSearch is a nice tool for this purpose.

I have installed IntelliWebSearch, and am now tinkering with the settings. It looks very promising - thanks for the tip!

Just wanted to note that Intelliwebsearch can be run in Linux via Wine. It's set up to call Internet Explorer, but you can change it to call up Linux-native Firefox (or any other browser) from the notification area.
