Italiano term

valve

Da Italiano a Inglese Scienze
probably valve (valva) but is there a more appropriate word?

SWIMMING BIVALVES = A few species can swim weakly by clapping their valves, notably the scallops. Valves are roughly circular with squared lugs either side of the short hinge. Valves open to 30( by a powerful internal ligament and snap shut expelling water from the mantle. The mantle opens all round and is edged with light sensitive organs or \'eyes\' that sparkle, and a curtain-like fold (the velum), which can direct currents for forward or backward movement
