Vara of the Virgin's Assumption
You'll need to explain this, Spiros.
The Vara is a 15-metre tall construction representing the Dormition/Assumption of the Virgin. It is carried through the streets of Messina on 15 August (you'll find pictures in the links below).
The name "Vara" is a variant of "bara" (coffin), and in this case refers to the entire elaborate construction, not just the reliquary.
I suppose your text is a caption for it means "The Vara of the Virgin's Assumption, surrounded by devotees/believers from Messina".
Cheers,
Giles

Reliquary casket
I don't know if this is the exact term, they have one here in Catania for the Festa di Sant'Agata; it's the casket that contains relics of the saint (or maybe more specifically, the carriage that transports the casket), I've never been able to work out if the term applies to both;
for the Assunta part it might be a good idea to check f they are referring to the Assumption of the BVM, in which case it is probably a carriage which transorts an effigy

\"è infatti uno dei più celebri e antichi carri devozionali esistenti ancora oggi in Europa\"
and
\"La festa della patrona si svolge, tra sacro e profano, il 15 agosto quando viene portato in trionfo sul carro il simulacro della Madonna.\"
so ot\'s definitely a carriage or \"float\" with an effigy or statue of the patron.

So \"Assunta\" is \"Our Lady of the Assumption\"
