we tangle up in the legoland of our growing up years

Your text is a load of fun! translating it can be a challenge and can also drive us nuts! I think Irenef is right in considering 'lego' as a reference to the well-known small plastic bricks.
In Italian we usually refer to these building blocks as "il lego". Italian dictionaries classify 'lego' as a "masculine invariable noun"(Dizionario della Lingua Italiana Sabatini-Coletti 2002, CD-ROM).

Ego

Could it be ''nell'ego'' that has been mispelled? Just guessing. Lego does not seem to exist...

Lego - building blocks

I think (s)he's referring to the old popular building blocks.
Brick by brick, you build up your personality, skills, and so forth, but you often end up in a tangle.
Quite funny to see the verb "attorcigliare" associated with the concept of building blocks.
Should I come up with a proper translation, I'll add it below.
