Italiano term

valenza

Da Italiano a Inglese Affari/Finanza Investimenti/Titoli technical analysis
This appears as a column heading in a table below a technical analysis chart of a company's stock. The table is of resistance and support levels, and other columns in the table include "livello generato (gg. fa)" (i.e. how many days ago the level was reached), "distanza" (percentage gap between the level and the current price), and "probabilità di incontro" (likelihood that the level will be reached).

The numbers in the "valenza" column don't really mean anything to me, but they mostly range from 1.00 to about 6.53, with one outlier at 13.37 and don't seem to be expressed in "stock price" terms. Maybe some sort of statistical term?

Discussion

Grey Drane (X) (asker) Nov 3, 2005:
Don't think so. The "distanza" and "probabilit" columns are percentages and each value has a percentage symbol. This is most likely some sort of statistical value.
Jo Macdonald Nov 3, 2005:
Hi Grey,
From your description I get the idea it might be a percentage value of another column

based on my understanding of TA and on the definition provided by Antonella, I think this may be it

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Despite your lack of confidence, I think I'll go with strength. I would like to have found out exactly how MF calculates the number and find a more precise term for the index, but I'll have to settle for conveying the "spirit" of the term. Thanks!"

value

I find valenza to usually mean value, but there may be a better synonym for the specific case, such as parameter or rating

valency

In Italian "valenza indica la robustezza (e quindi la significatività) di ogni livello, crescente all'aumentare del valore indicato (minimo pari a 0,5)" (see MilanoFinanza web site below).
The term traditionally indicates a property of the atoms. I think the word is the same in English, too.
Note from asker:
The chart actually comes from a Milano Finanza article, but I didn't think to check their site for a glossary. Thanks! I might prefer "significance" over "valence/valency" though, but I'm still hoping someone can tell me if there's a more specific statistic we're talking about. Cheers!
Peer comment(s):

neutral marionclarion : yes valenza has a meaning of valency - in science - but I don't believe it can be used like this in a financial analysis
