I am wondering what type of context this term is used. Is it more commonly used between friends or is it reserved for people in a more intimate relationship.

It was used between an acquainted man and a woman, you last answer was very close to the direction I am interested in. I didn't know if based only on the actual meaning of the words I should assume that they are in love, or if there is a casual usage of it between frinds, like your barmaid example. I hope this helps, I really appreciate your time and help on my question.

I don't think it's really used as a casual term of endearment between friends. It is either used extremely casually (just in the same way the woman in the corner shop back in England, or the barmaid down the pub calls me 'love'), or intimately, between lovers/parents-children. Not really much in between, I'd say
