Credo che "index" in questo caso sia sinonimo di "adjust". In effetti, guardando le immagini, proprio di riaggiustamento o ricalibrazione si tratta, visto che suggerisce di svitare e riavvitare a seconda dell'usura del pezzo in questione, al fine di "riallineare" in modo coretto il componente.
