Per la melma bruna c'è qualche riscontro su Google.
Nel tuo testo vedo sewage, perciò penso che sono le acque di scarico. Sludge ha anch'esso lo stesso significato, ma con l'uso di sewage, IMHO, sludge significa mud, cioè, melma o fango.
