Well... Nov 22, 2007

Well, as usual you expose yourself to criticism if you decide to open up about areas you feel vulnerable in. I still think you should feel free to ask any questions you may have as that is what proz is for- and people who ask questions tend to be better learners in the medium to long term.

you have to check your ego at the door when you are translating in a legal or medical setting (or any other formal setting) and stop proceedings to clear up anything that may have been incorrectly interpreted. This could be very important later on. I interpret in the courts quite often and sometimes have to stop the prosecutor or judge when they are going too fast or giving me too much information at a time, I think that Saying, excuse me your Honour, your worship, Mr. Prosecutor etc, the interpreter wishes to....(clarify, consult with NES etc.) makes you look like more of a professional. I have seen interpreters being dressed down by a judge when he/she feels that the interpreter is not interpreting "everything" that is being said.

Incidentally, something that causes my brain to stutter is when the NES uses a word in Spanglish. It seems that my brain is looking for a Spanish word and when a pseudo-English one comes up it causes a hiccup in my thinking, for example troca=truck, farma=farm. Its very odd but sometimes when I hear this "Estuve detrás de la troca" for example, what comes out of my mouth is "I was behind the camión", weird!
When certain words come up, you have to slow down and think about what you're saying and don't be afraid to admit your mistakes.
