(appointments/experience) as an expert witness

during legal proceedings, the parties or the court can appoint an ecxpert witness to give expert evidence - a consulente tecnico di ufficio (CTU), or di parte (CTP) - i.e. appointed by one of the parties in the proceedings

The term is a bit misleading, in the sense that an expert witness is not a witness in the normal sense of the term. Rather than witnessing a particular event, he/she provides an expert opinion on a issue vital to the case. Depending on the case, an expert witness could be anything from a pathologist to an engineer, an architect or an accountant - even a translator in some cases!
