Encontré esta definición la cual deseo compartir con ustedes.
Aunque la mayoría de los lectores interpreta la frase como “hombre bueno” (una encuesta personal lo demuestra), el hecho es que Cervantes dice “hombre de bien,” lo que me induce a la siguiente posible interpretación. A mi modo de ver, el hombre bueno no es el que hace o practica el bien, sino el que “no hace el mal,” el proverbial hombre que “no ha matado ni una mosca,” mientras que el “hombre de bien” es aquél que, además de ser bueno, “hace, practica, reparte” el bien. La mejor y la cristiana manera de hacer el bien es practicar el altruismo, la generosidad, y ¿cómo se puede ser generoso y hombre de bien, siendo pobre? La interpretación de Ciriaco Morón Arroyo deja la pregunta sin contestar, ya que no se puede ser “hijo de bienes” y pobre a la vez, mientras si definimos al “hombre de bien” como al que hace el bien porque es bueno, entonces la respuesta a la pregunta sería que es posible.

agree  danielc: Closest answer. "Hombre de bien" is not really just an honest man. It implies a un upstanding man of the community, at least middle class, such as a rotary club member or something along those lines. Which is why it may be used sarcastically.
