A text written by a Peruvian critic in the 1950s about nationalism in art:

Para muchos, la nacionalidad es el cúmulo de factores tangibles con los cuales un pueblo entra en competencia con otros, buscando superioridad o por lo menos igualdad. Se ha construido una serie de obras y de símbolos que el orgullo nacional enaltece para poder amarles. En cierto sentido, la idealización y acomodo de obras y de hombres se hace para justificar el amor. No es el amor puro, sin justificaciones de superioridad o de igualdad.
