In order to translate a French University Degree Transcript:
One of the mark obtained by the student is about the preparation of its Dissertation : note argumentaire.

At the end of the first semester the student had to deliver one. This consisted of writing a few pages detailing the subject he has chosen, and what questions it will answer. It is a sort of written presentation and detailed plan of what the dissertation will be about.

Does anyone knows how to translate this into English.

I was thinking of dissertation statement / brief but I am not so keen on it. Unless I use argumentation note but this sounds wierd.

Many thanks

neutral  B D Finch: For a first degree? I suppose that it could be a taught masters, but then it wouldn't really be a research project. For an MPhil or PhD, one would expect the student to have done this before being accepted.

-> How do we know it's a first degree? Could be the 1st semester of a master's. The taught master's I've been involved in often used the term "projet de recherche" about first semester submissions for dissertations to be written in the 2nd semester.

Explanation:
My reading of this is that it is a first degree, rather than a PhD. You have to submit your research proposal before being accepted as a PhD student, rather than after.
