Un conexon este alcatuit dintr-un singur tip de proteina transmembranara, denu-mita conexina (M, 280-320 kDa), al carei lant polipeptidic (280 de aminoacizi) strabate de patru ori plasmalema. Cele patru domenii prezinta o structura secundara de tip a-helix, al treilea domeniu fiind *amfipatic. Conexonii din membranele celulelor Invecinate sunt de ordinul sutelor In j. c. si se afla dispusi cap la cap, formand un canal de comunicare continuu Intre dto-plasmele celor doua celule. J. c. prezinta doua conformatii distincte: inchisa si deschisa. Permeabilitatea j. c. este depen-denta de pH, Ca2* liber din citosol, valoarea potentialului de membrana si de o serie de semnale chimice extracelulare. Ele au un rol determinant In functionarea normala a celulelor asociate In tesuturi. Sinapsele chimice sunt, de asemenea, j. c. Sin.: jonctiune de tip gap.
