Supongo que al ser "discourse", es decir, "connected speech", se refiere no a fonética articulatoria, sino a "stress, rhythm and intonation".

Phonetics

Explanation:
Alejandro's answer is the safest, but based on the extremely limited context I think the course is just basic phonetics for ESL teachers. I'm sure you have access to the context that will indicate which answer is better.

neutral  Alejandro Alcaraz Sintes: Yes, out of context it's difficult to know how precise one should be. Bw.

agree  Kathryn Litherland: "discourse" in English (esp. in academia) means a long speech act in a particular context. I think in this context "speech" is a more natural term to use. So simply "phonetics," or phonetics of speech.

-> Hi, Muriel. No wonder. It take it as "spoken discourse" (connected speech, in my answer) and they are lang.-specific. Try combining "phonetic features/characteristics", "(spoken) discourse", "English", "connected speech" and/or "connected discourse". Bw.

Phonetic elements of the speech.

Explanation:
The entire sound or resonance of a speech is one element used to secure the attention of an audience. It is also important in comprehension and message transimission.

"It's not ust what you say, but how you say it that matters."

Also, in English the use of the word "speech" to mean lecture or discourse is common.

Basic phonetic knowledge was required in my major field of study.

-> Muriel, I am an American who was educated with American English. I have credentials that will verify my abilites in English, Spanish and French. In American English, with this context in mind you may say that the word elements is a synonym for themes.

Y agregaría: coincido con la nota de Kathryn Litherland: donde "'Discourse' in English means a long speech act in a particular context." Y que... "in this context "speech" is a more natural term to use.
