Buon Natale a tutti! Reference: http://www.investorwords.com/5306/white_knight.html |

to the last men Explanation: Secondo me il secondo prete intendeva dire "chiederei di difendere il Papa all'arma bianca", nel senso di difenderlo strenuamente, fino all'ultimo uomo. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 4 hrs (2008-12-22 01:37:01 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Oops, ovviamente intendevo "to the last man" |

to take up the sword Explanation: it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arma_bianca I think he's trying to say that he would ask to take up the traditional sword (or cutting or thrusting weapon) to stop the attackers, as opposed to modern guns and exploding arms. |

(Papal) Swiss Guard Explanation: I think they do refer to the Swiss Guards that serve in the Vatican and to the fact that they wear a sword or a helberd http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_Guard http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_Guard#Equipment http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halberd http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alabarda -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2008-12-21 22:03:13 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- sorry, I meant "halberd" :) -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 13 hrs (2008-12-22 10:04:06 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- I know exactly what "arma bianca" refers to as I think was clear from my answer, I only suggested the Swiss Guard because it was and is the army in charge of defending the Pope using the kind of weapons we are talking about. And the use of the verb "to ask" led me to think so. You don't "ask" a weapon, so obviously with "arma bianca" the priests were really referring to people (who would be asked to defend the Pope using those weapons). The most logical answer has indeed been chosen by Simona to avoid any ambiguity. |

Taking up arms Explanation: If it's referring to ask for an army help, I think that the most appropriate would be: to take up arms (prenderi le armi) or to brandish the sword (brandire la spada). "Arma bianca" refers to swords and other cutting or thrusting weapons. The translation of the text above might be: "...he would ask to take up arms to defend the Pope..." "...he would ask to brandish the sword to defend the Pope..." -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 20 hrs (2008-12-22 17:40:59 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- http://dizionari.hoepli.it/Dizionario_Italiano/Inglese/parol... Combattere all’arma bianca: to fight with cold steel. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/cold steel Cold steel: a weapon made of steel, as a sword. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 20 hrs (2008-12-22 17:48:20 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- Maybe the entire phrase would be: Prete: Se i Russi arrivono alle porte di Rome, cosa faresti? Prete B: Chiederei DI DIFENDERE (di combattere) all'arma bianca il Papa. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 21 hrs (2008-12-22 17:59:06 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- I meant: ...al Papa. |

Reference: armi non da fuoco Reference information: ciao simona, le armi bianche sono armi non da fuoco ma non capisco, il resto della frase era in italiano e l'hai già tradotto lasciando solo il termine in questione non tradotto perchè non sei sicura o è proprio così l'originale? nel primo caso, sarebbe forse meglio che fornissi tutta la frase nel contesto originale in italiano -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 11 mins (2008-12-21 21:08:25 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- vedi anche http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arma_bianca -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 16 mins (2008-12-21 21:14:08 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- guarda anche questo thread http://it.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=2006110306103... |
