German term or phrase: Grat
I've come across this term in safety instructions for workers at construction sites. Under handling instructions for hand tools, the tool in question is a Meißel (chisel).

At first I thought that they were talking about a "guard" of sorts, but that doesn't seem to work.

Der *Gart* am Meißelkopf muss entfernt werden. Es darf kein Bart wachsen!

I'll post the "Bart" thing in another question.....

TIA!!

Explanation:
You should remove the mushroom from the cold chisel.

To ensure exceptional performance and long working life, this range of tools undergo controlled hardening and tempering, followed by accurate grinding which results in excellent working edges. A selection of cold chisels and bolsters in the popular sizes are manufactured with a domed anti-mushroom head which helps prevent spreading of the striking head.

“MUSHROOM” HEAD
Repeated blows cause the softer head to spread and crack at
the edges. If this is allowed to continue, small particles are
liable to break off and fly. Regular dressing on a grinding wheel will reduce this hazard.

Look at the picture under "mushroom head". You'll see the burrs sticking out - those are the hairs of the "beard." http://www.osh.govt.nz/order/catalogue/archive/coldchisels.p...

When I asked my husband, he explained the concept the same way this was shown in your example. So, in the end, that's what I went with. Thanks!
