Hi everyone!
I really hope you could help me. I'm kinda new in this although I have some experience in subtitling and similar services.
I'm native Italian and I work from English, Spanish and Portuguese.
I would like to start sending my application to agencies as freelance. I want to build my rates, considering I have some experience, the languages I know/translate from and an avarage number of minutes I can handle per hour.

- Transcribing: __ €/min
- Time-coding/spotting: __ €/min
- Translation (ES/EN/PT > IT): __ €/min (or word? What is the best choice?)
- SDH/CC: __ €/min
- Revision/QC: __ €/min
Also, are there other services I should consider? What rates would you suggest?

Have a look around the fora. There already are countless rate enquiries, in more than one language pair. And have a good read of those threads focussing on scammers and bottom feeders, to avoid falling in traps you may then find difficult to get out of.
Ultimately, it is up to each individual professional to provide their own rates. There are too many variables (language pair, field, experience, market, client, etc, etc, etc.) to take into account, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach.
And how could we suggest any services missing from your list, not knowing if you would be up to them?

See more The closest thing we have to a comprehensive list of subtitling rates is the Origination Rate Card System from Netflix. I suggested a possible way to make use of them in this post. However, depending on your market situation, it can be difficult to find agencies/clients who would accept your proposed rates. The types of videos you translate can also affect your price tags (i.e. an office presentation video may have a different rate than a Hollywood movie).
Regardless, here’s what I’d do: First, I’ll determine my standard rate only for subtitle translations from a premade English template, to find the middle ground. Then, I’ll determine the minimum and maximum rates regardless of the services I provide. Lastly, I’ll grade the job types according to their difficulty, and assign the appropriate rate to each of them within the limit of my minimum and maximum rates.
About per video-minute rate vs. per word rate, the former is more commonplace. But I have seen agencies using word counts to determine the work volumes myself. My question is: how did they count the words in a subtitle file? Subtitles are not something you should open in MS Word and run a word count to determine how many words the translator has to translate. For example, to get an accurate reading for an SRT file, all the timestamps and event numbers need to be omitted. Or take ASS/SSA as another example. It includes the style formatting along with the subtitles if you open it in MS Word. Obviously, you are not supposed to translate those.
I’ll never take jobs from an outsourcer who uses word counts for subtitles, personally. But if I really, really want to work with them, I’ll try to ask if it would be possible to use a per video-minute rate for the payment. Time is a universal measurement unit, so it’ll be less likely to get disputed. But YMMV.

Hello Piero,
It's great that you have experience and know how much content you can handle per day.
To set your rates, calculate them based on the money you'd like to earn and the time it will take you. As simple as that.
Usually, translation in subtitling is based on minutes rather than words. Sometimes, it can be according to subtitles events.
