1) I tried to create PDFs from my Word docs. The experience was very bad. Either the text flow direction would change or the file would become unreadable on other computers (encoding problems). Recently, I received a sample text from some agency, where Hebrew text was LTR.

Maybe someone knows what to do and how one can fix such files?

2) Are there any programs for OCRing Hebrew PDFs? FineReader does not know this language.

Useful programs Nov 29, 2009

1. Try TED Notepad (http://jsimlo.sk/notepad/). It offers a plethora of text manipulation options (like swapping letters, words, lines etc).
A robust PDF producer can be found here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/qvpdf/ but I've never heard that a PDF producer can change the text flow direction.

2. אותיות (http://www.kotev.co.il/files/otiot.exe) - it's a demo version.
or http://www.kotev.co.il/files/otiotp.exe supporting simultaneous recognition of both Hebrew and English characters.
Ligature (http://www.ligatureltd.com/english/1_ce.htm) supposed to be better than Otiyot and more expensive too. By the way, they offer free OCR online.

How exactly did you make the PDFs? Nov 30, 2009

What program did you use to generate the PDFs?

I use Adobe Acrobat (5.0 ME) and it produces perfect Hebrew PDFs.

Also, make sure that the fonts are embeded in the PDF.
