I have a Redline legal document in MS Word 2003. It is over 70 pages long and has over 100 footnotes. I translated it before and now I am introducing numerous revisions, including revisions of footnotes.

Now I know why I always hated footnotes: is there a simple (simpler?) way to edit them (add, delete, change) without spending hours and hours on end?

Thanks a lot in advance and apologies for my poor computer skills (before THIS project, I thought I was an advanced user

You can show all the footers one after the other Mar 24, 2011

In Word menu, select View -> Normal in order to activate normal view. Then, select View -> Footnotes to open the footnotes pane on the bottm of the screen. You can resize the pane for your need.

An off-the-record suggestion Mar 24, 2011

This is the typical situation in which a CAT tool would have saved you a pile of work. If you had translated the document with a CAT tool, you would now reprocess the document and update as necessary. The CAT tool would easily present the footnotes to you for translation....

Maybe you want to consider a CAT tool for your future work.

Good luck!

If there are several footnotes in a single sentence (normally one segment), only Trados Studio 2009 or Across can help. Other CAT tools (e.g. MemoQ, DVX, WordFast, SDLX) divide the sentence at the point where there is a footnote.

Example sentence from Wikipedia:

Softwoods, while generally much lower in tannins than hardwoods,[7] are usually not recommended for use in an aquarium[8] so using a hardwood with a very light color, indicating a low tannin content, can be an easy way to avoid tannins.

7. ^ Polyflavonoid tannins — a main cause of soft-rot failure in CCA-treated timber
8. ^ Driftwood Do's & Don'ts

Many CAT tools will divide it into 5 segments:
Softwoods, while generally much lower in tannins than hardwoods,

^ Polyflavonoid tannins — a main cause of soft-rot failure in CCA-treated timber

are usually not recommended for use in an aquarium

^ Driftwood Do's & Don'ts

so using a hardwood with a very light color, indicating a low tannin content, can be an easy way to avoid tannins.

But Studio and Across will divide it into only 3 complete and easy-to-translate segments.

Thanks, Yossi, Tomas and Selcuk Mar 25, 2011

Thanks a lot, Yossi, Tomas, Selcuk!

It turned out to be not so bad - I should not have panicked, really. Although I had to go through every single footnote to double-check.

Always good to know there is someone willing to help. Thanks again.

Just a quick correction Mar 26, 2011

If you have footnotes and you want to process them in memoQ, please try and import the document as DOCX rather than DOC/RTF. That filter addresses this issue.
