The central features of anorexia nervosa
The word anorexia means loss of appetite. However loss of appetite in the sense of never being hungry is not a central or necessary feature of anorexia nervosa. In fact, an anorexic may at times be very hungry. Nevertheless, she will characteristically behave as if she had lost her appetite since to eat normally would lead her to gain weight. Anorexia nervosa is essentially about weight rather than eating. A central feature of the disorder is a body weight which is abnormally low for the age, height and sex of the person. However, there are many other reasons why someone may be abnormally thin. What is more specific is the subject's attitude to her weight. Someone in a state of anorexia nervosa will not always be frank about her feelings, but when she is she will say that she is frightened of being heavier. She may suffer through being thin, but compared with putting on weight it is seen as the lesser evil. Professor Crisp of St George's Hospital Medical School, London, has coined the term "weight phobia" to describe this attitude. A phobia is a morbid fear leading to the avoidance of that which is feared.
