Kehlmann parla della irriducibilità dell’esistenza a poche categorie preconfezionate, una considerazione drammaticamente contemporanea, in un’epoca come la nostra, dominata dall’incertezza.
E’ questa la contemporaneità che La Milanesiana porta ogni anno a Milano, riuscendo nel compito di inventarsi un tema guida – per la prossima estate abbiamo I quattro elementi, fuoco, aria, terra, acqua – e a proporre al pubblico la mutevolezza del mondo di oggi attraverso la letteratura, che, aggredita dalla tv e dalla dittatura dell’immagine digitale, sopravvive dentro commistioni apparentemente impossibili. Contamina i generi del sapere, musica compresa, e trasfigura il racconto in nuove forme di narrazione che sfiorano linguaggi contemporanei come la televisione, l’informazione via web, la fiction.
Un mix che il festival ideato da Elisabetta Sgarbi riesce a mantenere sempre entro i confini della godibilità accessibile ai profani, con appassionanti reading di filosofia , come nel caso della dissertazione improvvisata di Bernard Henry Levy dell’anno scorso, su Hegel e l’assoluto in Occidente. Con code di ragazzi in attesa lungo via San Giovanni sul Muro per ascoltare dal vivo Battiato. Ma anche con l’entusiasmo dei lettori, che affollano la Sala Montanelli della Fondazione Corriere della Sera per seguire scrittori Premio Nobel discutere di Darfur, antisemitismo, costruzione di un romanzo destinato al Pulitzer sulla schiavitù nel sud degli Stati Uniti. Ma pensiamo anche al lungo applauso che ha accolto Elie Wiesel al teatro Dal Verme.
La Milanesiana è per Milano tutte queste cose insieme: serate di intrattenimento, occasione di riflessione, brevi e intensi momenti di analisi dei significati e degli enigmi della realtà che ci circonda. Un festival sicuramente, e il più internazionale e “fresco” della città. Un appuntamento che coinvolge più luoghi di Milano, dal Dal Verme al Corriere fino agli Arcimboldi, senza esaurirsi nell’evento. E che rappresenta una formula controcorrente di divertimento: colta, ma ironica. Con un pubblico di affezionati, eppure sperimentata da giovani e ragazzi. Mai uguale a se stessa, però capace di non rinunciare ai suoi presupposti di festival di altissimo profilo culturale, nato per far pensare e non solo per riempire serate d’estate. E’ inoltre circostanza particolarmente felice avere insieme, qui a Milano, Amos Oz e Avraham Yehoshua, proprio nell’anno in cui si festeggiano i Sessantanni della nascita dello Stato di Israele.

This is the modernity brought to Milan every year by the Milanesiana, which consistently manages to invent a guiding theme for itself - this summer's theme is The four elements: fire, air, earth, water- whilst illustrating today’s changing world to the public using literature, which, assailed by the television and the dominance of digital images, survives through seemingly impossible concoctions. It seeps into the numerous genres, including music, and transforms the story using new narrative forms that give birth to contemporary languages such as television, web-based information and fiction.
It is a mix that the festival conceived by Elisabetta Sgarbi manages to keep within the realms of enjoyment that is readily accessible to all, with passionate readings on philosophy, as in the case of Bernard Henry Levy’s improvised talk on Hegel and the absolute in the West last year, when we also saw long queues of young people lining via San Giovanni sul Muro to hear Battiato perform live. The festival also manages to capture the enthusiasm of readers who packed into the Sala Montanelli at the Fondazione Corriere della Sera to hear Nobel Prize-winning authors discuss Darfur, anti-Semitism and writing a Pulitzer-prize winning novel on slavery in the southern United States. And how could we forget the lengthy applause given to Elie Wiesel at the teatro Dal Verme.
The Milanesiana means many things to Milan: evenings of entertainment, an opportunity for reflection, brief and intense moments spent analysing the significance and enigmas of the world we live in. It is undoubtedly the city's most international and "freshest" festival. It is an event that uses most of Milan’s venues, from the Dal Verme Theatre to the Corriere and the Arcimboldi. It is a form of enjoyment that goes against the grain: it is cultured, yet ironic, with an affectionate audience that includes teenagers and young people. It is a festival that is never the same, but always capable of retaining its status as a high-profile cultural festival that was founded to provoke thought and not just as something to do during the summer. We are also very pleased to welcome Amos Oz and Abraham Yehoshua to Milan in the 60th anniversary year of the birth of the State of Israel.
