Testo originale - Ungherese Kint, az összekötő híd felé csavarogtunk, néhány munkanélküliek. Céltalanul és reménytelenül, csak éppen hogy kint voltunk a levegőn. Lehet, hogy tudat alatt éreztük, erre jönnek hazafelé a lányok a gyárakból. Lehet, hogy őmiattuk tévedtünk erre. Mostanában ritkán jöttem össze lányokkal, alig is éreztem a nemiségemet. Valami komor magányosság felé sodródtam, nem tudom, egyedül csak az anyagi nyomorúságom volt-e ennek az oka. A szerelmi rajongásokat, amiket könyvekben olvastam, sőt néha a barátaim is ömlengtek az ilyesmiről – nem ismertem. Ilyen érzéseim nem voltak. Ha egy szép lánnyal összekerültem és megkívántam, nem vágyakoztam utána olyan intenzíven, hogy ebből lelki zűrzavaraim származhattak volna. Megkívántam, és megpróbáltam nagyobb kerülők és hangulatos ömlengések nélkül hozzáférkőzni. Ha a lány elhúzódott tőlem, se belső, se külső harcot nem kezdtem érte, az ő tartózkodása valami taszító, kiábrándító erővel is bírt az én számomra. Ha ő nem akart engem, bennem is megszűnt az utána való kívánkozás. S bizonyára most is, hogy itt lődörögtünk a híd körül, szenvedélyesség nélkül gondoltam a lányokra. Jó lett volna valamelyikkel megismerkedni, mint ahogyan enni is jó, ha éhes az ember, de nem éreztem szomorúságot, a magányosság tragikumát, ami a fiatalság szexuális kielégületlenségéből ered.
A többiek már belezökkentek ebbe az örökösen kísértő témába, de én alig is figyeltem a beszélgetésre. Újpest felé mentünk, lomposak és hangosak voltunk, a többiek nyugtalanságában meglátszott a nemi fölgerjedés, én tiszta voltam, jólesett a hűvös szél, ami meg-megcsapott bennünket a Dunától.
A Juta-gyár elé értünk, csak úgy szokásból bementünk a portáshoz. Egyáltalában nem gondoltam rá, hogy itt munkát lehetne kapni, hiszen az egész gyárban aligha dolgozhatott több három szerszámlakatosnál. S mégis a portás átvette a könyvem, bevitte az irodába.
– Holnap reggel elkezdhetne? – kérdezte, mikor visszajött.
Mosolyogva feleltem:
– El! Mikor kezdenek?
– Hétkor.
Hónapok óta szaladgáltam már, hogy valamiféle munkát fogjak magamnak, s végre így, ilyen véletlenül jutottam hozzá. S nem is utolsó szerencse egy ilyen helyen dolgozni. A vasgyárban, ahol tömegmunkához kerül az ember, mint egy géprészt beállítják a rendszerbe, és évekig dolgozhatik egy sablonmunkán, ami testben és lélekben kegyetlenül elfárasztja az embert. A szerszámmunka könnyű és változatos. Az embernek nemcsak az izmai, hanem az esze is dolgozik, lekötődik az érdeklődése, s így valami élvezetet is találhat a bérmunka különben fárasztó és gyűlöletes egyhangúságában.
Eddig csak hírből ismertem ezt a gyárat, most belülről láttam, hogy milyen nagy és sok embert foglalkoztató telep ez. A munkásság kilencven százaléka nő volt, parasztlányok és asszonyok Újpest környékéről. A szerszámműhelyben csupa idősebb ember dolgozott. Asztalosok, lakatosok és szíjgyártók, mintha csak valahonnan a száz év előtti céhrendszerből maradtak volna itt. Tempósak voltak, mint a paraszt napszámosok, és fecsegők, mint a vénasszonyok. A szervezkedésnek még csak a szele sem járt errefelé. Elég rendes heti fizetésük volt, nyugodtan dolgoztak, és sokat ittak. A hétfői nap teljesen az iszákosságé volt. A ruhásszekrényekben állandóan tele üvegek sorakoztak, az emberek mint a holdkórosok lézengtek a telepen. S ezeken a hétfői napokon a mester se jött közénk. Bent maradt a fülkéjében, és ő is ivott – így volt ez rendjén. Én nehezen fanyalodtam rá a szokásaikra. Észrevétlenül mögöttem maradtak az iszákosság évei, s mivel természetemből sohasem kívántam az alkoholt, most nagyon is megéreztem ezt a változást. De különben kinéztek volna maguk közül. Ittam és barátkoztam velük, ők közel engedtek magukhoz, és olyan szavakkal nyúltam hozzájuk, amik elől eddig elmenekültek, amik előtt esztendőkig süketek tudtak maradni. Esténként átmentünk a közeli kocsmába, beszélgettünk a munkáról, és beszélgettünk a munkásember életéI. kötet 276ről, és anélkül hogy félelem vagy harag fogta volna el őket, beszélgetni kezdtünk a szervezkedésről is. Nem tárgyilagosan beszéltünk, és nem nyíltan agitáltam. Ez egy nyers, kemény talaj volt, egészen elölről kellett kezdeni a munkát. Sokáig egészen egyedül fáradoztam. Később a déli pihenő közben összetalálkoztam egy szövőnővel, s ebben a lányban egy nagyon értékes szocialista agitátorral ismerkedtem meg. Balázs Klárának hívták, tagja volt az Újpesti Munkásotthonnak és az antialkoholista páholynak. Eddig még nem is találkoztam össze a munkások között ilyen komoly és okos nővel.
Kint ültem az udvaron egy zsákkötegen, és hívatlanul, kérdezetlenül hozzám jött.
– Most lépett be a gyárba? – kérdezte.
– Pár nap előtt – mondtam, s elfogadtam a felém nyújtott kezét, és megmondtam a nevem.
– Nem tudom, elvtárs-e maga vagy sem. Szeretnék már egy érdemes emberrel is találkozni itt.
– Persze hogy elvtárs vagyok, s örülök neki, hogy maga is az.
– Gyűjjön este az Otthonba, ott kint is szükség lenne még jó elvtársakra.
Megígértem, hogy kimegyek, aztán a gyári helyzetről beszélgettünk, a rendszerről, a munkabérről és arról, hogy hogyan lehetne a szervező munkát megkezdeni. Feltűnően okosan beszélt, látszott, hogy jártassága van ezekben a dolgokban, és az is meglátszott rajta, hogy sokat olvasott. Örültem ennek az ismeretségnek, alig vártam az estét, hogy tovább beszélgethessek vele dolgokról, amik engem érdekelnek. Szép, tiszta arcú és nagyon ízlésesen öltözött lány volt, de egy pillanatra se gondoltam rá, hogy mint férfi közeledjek hozzá. Csak a kellemes embert és az érdemes, okos elvtársat láttam benne. Egész este szervezeti kérdésekről tanácskoztunk. Megállapodtunk benne, hogy valamit csinálni kell a gyárban, siralmasan nagy volt a nők munkaideje, és siralmasan kicsiny a munkabérük. De ezek a nők Újpest környéki parasztok voltak, akiknek van egy kis földjük vagy családi gazdaságuk, csak olyan mellékes életük a gyári munka, s ezért eddig semmiféle mozgalomba nem lehetett őket bekapcsolni. Úgy határoztuk el, hogy egy tánccal egybekötött kedélyes estét rendezünk az Otthonban, és így próbáljuk meg őket először összehozni. De így se ment könnyen a munka. Klára bevitte a gyárba a műsort, s szinte emberfeletti erőt kellett kifejtenie ahhoz, hogy pár darabot eladhasson ezeknek a zsugori és érdeklődés nélküli lelkeknek. Mégis eléggé jól sikerült az este. A lányok, akik eljöttek, tarka, kemény szoknyákba öltöztek, mezítelen karjaikból sugárzott az egészség, s a fiatal iparoslegények, akik az utcán eddig szóba sem álltak volna ezekkel a „Panca Márikkal”, lassan beszivárogtak a terembe, belevesztek a táncba, forgatták a kemény, ropogós testeket, s a lányok boldogan forogtak és visítottak, s ez a számukra szokatlan barátkozás érdeklődést és értelmességet váltott ki belőlük, túlvitte őket a mindennapi életükön.
S a gyárban taktikusan, óvatos rábeszélésekkel megkezdődött a szervezkedés.
Keresetem minden fillérét hazaadtam, az egész család mintha hirtelen levegőhöz jutott volna. Föllobbant az életkedvünk, de az anyám már ismerhetett volna engem, tudhatta volna, hogy milyen keveset jelent az, ha én munkába állok. De ő végletekig optimista természetű volt, s a legkisebb lehetőség is elég volt neki ahhoz, hogy egy egész új élet elkövetkezését várja. Keveset tartózkodtam otthon. Reggel korán mentem munkába, este kimentem Újpestre, s csak későn éjjel vetődtem megint haza. Ők ilyenkor már aludtak, volt úgy, hogy én is rögtön lefeküdtem, volt, hogy egyedül fönt maradtam és írtam. Néha szinte kényszerítő erőket éreztem magamban az írásra. Egészen magamnak dolgoztam, senkivel sem találkozhattam, akivel újabb írásaimról beszélhettem volna. Egy-egy verset beküldtem a Független Magyarországnak, s azok meg is jelentek. De alig hatott rám a nyomtatásban viszontlátásuk. Kiközösítettnek és megbüntetettnek éreztem magam. Klárának nem mertem erről az írói mániámról szólni, szóba se mertem hozni előtte az irodalmat.
S egyszerre ő váratlanul megkérdezte tőlem:
– Mondd csak, nem te vagy az a Kassák, akinek versei jelentek meg a Független Magyarországban?
Fejembe szaladt a vér, alig tudtam válaszolni:
– De igen – dadogtam. – Megjelent benne néhány versem.
A lány kedvesen, örömmel nevetett:
– Milyen érdekes gyerek vagy! Mért nem mondtad ezt nekem? Szeretem a verseket, s szavalni is szoktam az Otthonban. Szavaltam már Csizmadiától, Alba Nevistől, Erdős Renée-től és Adytól is. Szereted te Ady verseit?

It's possible that subconsciously we could feel that the girls would be coming this way from the factories. It's possible that because of them that we had ended up there. Those days I didn't mingle with the girls as much -- I barely even felt any sexual urges. I had drifted into some sort of gloomy lonesomeness, though I'm not sure if it was simply due to my financial woes. Those romantic raptures, the kind that I had read about in books -- heck, even the boys would gush about the stuff -- was something I wasn't familiar with. I didn't have these sorts of feelings. If I happened across a pretty young woman and felt attracted to her, I didn't do so in such an intense manner that any emotional tension may arise later on. Simply put, I’d fancy her, and without any superfluous effort or sentimental wooing I'd try to get close to her. If she pulled away, I’d face neither internal nor external distress; her very reservation had some cleansing, disillusioning power over me. If she wasn’t attracted to me, my own desire would quickly fade as well. And certainly at that moment, lingering around the bridge, I could reflect impassionately about the girls. Sure, it would have been nice to get to know one of them, just in the same way that eating is nice when one is hungry, but I didn't feel any sadness or pangs of loneliness like the ones that stem from the sexual frustrations of youth.
The rest of the men had settled onto this unceasingly provocative subject, though I was barely paying attention to their chatter. We were headed towards Újpest, ruffled and a bit rowdy. Their restlessness exhibited clearly their sexual cravings, but I on the other hand, was clean and enjoyed the cool breeze that was striking us from off the Danube.
We made it to the Juta factory and, just out of habit, made our way to the reception area. The thought hadn’t crossed my mind that I might find some work, seeing that the entire factory could barely employ even three toolmakers. Nevertheless, the man at the desk took my papers and disappeared into the back room.
"Can you start tomorrow?" he asked when he came back.
"Certainly! What time does work start?" I replied, perking up.
"7 o'clock."
I had already been running about for months in search of a job and then this: stumbling across it unexpectedly. In fact, it wasn't at all a shabby place to end up in. At the iron factory, where you are one among the many other hard laborers, like cog in a machine, the foreman could exploit you for years doing some mentally and physically draining routine task. Tooling work, however, is lighter and more varied. Not only are the muscles working, but also the mind, which becomes so absorbed that it’s possible to even get some enjoyment out of the otherwise awful, debilitating monotony of wage work.
Up until this point, I had only heard about the factory, but now from up close I saw the sheer number of people it employed. Ninety percent of them were women, country girls, old and young, from the outskirts of Újpest. In the tooling shop it was just the older men: woodworkers, machinists, belt workers, all as if they had come straight out of the guilds from a hundred years ago. They were swift like day workers and chatty like old women. There wasn't even a hint of talk about organizing around there. They had a rather decent weekly pay, worked in peace, and drank plentily. Mondays were especially dedicated to inebriation. Full bottles invariably lined the lockers meant for clothes, and the men dragged their feet about the factory floor like sleepwalkers. Those days the foreman didn't even make his rounds on the floor. He stayed in his cabin and drank his share as well. It was only fair. I reluctantly took part in their tradition. My drinking days had passed by unnoticed, and since it had never been in my nature to drink, I was quite aware of the change. Still, they otherwise wouldn't have received me very warmly. Thus, I drank and befriended them. They allowed me into their circle, and I spoke to them of such things that until that point they would have recoiled from -- things that they would simply pay no attention to for years. At night we would head over to the nearby bar, talk about work, about the worker's life, and without being gripped by fear or rage we even began talking about unionizing. We didn't speak impartially, though I didn't overtly try to stir up anything political. It was a hard, rough earth, and one had to cultivate it entirely from scratch. For quite a while I exerted myself without any help. Later on, during a midday break, one of the factory weavers happened across me, and in her I found a rather admirable socialist “agitator”. Her name was Klára Balázs; she was a member at the Újpest Workers' Center as well as the local temperance chapter. I had never met such a serious and intelligent woman in this environment.
I was sitting out in the courtyard on a bundle of sacks when, unprompted and without question, she came up to me.
"Just start here at the factory?" she asked.
"A few days ago," I said, taking the outstretched hand and introducing myself.
"I don't know whether or not you're for organizing, but I'd like to finally get to know somebody worthwhile around here."
"I sure am. It's nice to meet another one as well."
"You should come out tonight to the Center. We could use a good advocate out there."
I promised to come out, and we started talking about the situation at the factory, the management, the wages, and how it might be possible to start organizing. She spoke strikingly sensibly, and it was apparent that she was rather experienced in these matters. It was also evident that she was well-read. I was very glad to have her as an acquaintance, and I looked forward to continuing our conversation later that evening. She had a pretty, clean face and was smartly dressed, but the thought never crossed my mind to make any advances. I only saw her as a pleasant, respectable, and astute compatriot. We conferred all night about the question regarding organization. We both agreed that something needs to be done at the factory -- the girls worked pitifully long hours and took home pitifully small wages. But these were country girls from Újpest, who likely also had a small plot of land or family farm. Their factory lives were of such minor importance to them that it was difficult to bring them into these matters. We resolved to arrange a lighthearted evening at the Center accompanied by a dance and in this way try to unite them. Not that this was particularly easy. Klára later revealed the details of the event at the factory, which required essentially superhuman effort on her part in order to sell the idea to these stingy, disinterested souls. In spite of all this, the night was quite a success. The girls who came wore stiff, brightly-colored skirts and left their arms uncovered, which radiated their vitality. The young factory lads, who until then hadn't taken the slightest interest in those Panca Mári's, gradually filtered into the room and dissolved into the dance. They spun the lean, nimble bodies of the girls, who squealed with delight from time to time; this rather unusual intimacy brought out a zeal and intelligence from them even if they were only momentarily freed from the constraints of their usual, everyday lives.
Thereafter, back at the factory we began to spread talk of organizing through careful and measured efforts.
Every cent of my pay from the factory went back to the family, who seemed as if to have suddenly regained their breath. Everyone's zest for life had reignited, although my mother should have known better -- should have seen it for what it was -- how little it meant that I had started working again. But her optimistic nature knew no bounds, and even the slightest hope was enough for her to start looking forward to an entirely new life.
I’d leave for work early in the morning, head out to Újpest at night, and only much later return home. They would already be asleep by then. At times, I’d tuck in immediately, and other times I’d stay up and write. I felt driven to do so, as if by some unknown force. I wrote entirely for myself. I couldn’t even have conversed with anyone over my latest works. I would send a poem here or there to “Independent Hungary”, and they would even get published. But it barely affected me to see them in print. I felt like an outcast. I didn't dare mention my writing obsession to Klára -- heck, I didn't even try talking literature with her.
And just once, out of the blue, she asked.
"Tell me, you aren't that Kassák guy, whose poems appear in ‘Independent Hungary’?"
The blood rushed to my head. I could scarcely respond.
"Yea that's me," I stuttered. "They've published a few of my poems."
She laughed pleasantly.
"What a curious lad you are! Why didn't you tell me? I love poetry. I even recite it sometimes at the Center. I've recited some stuff from Csizmadia, Nevis Alba, Renée Erdős and even Ady. Say, do you like Ady's work?"

Beáta, az üzlet öltözködési tanácsadója szerint ezek jó minőségű ingek, ezért László egynél többet szeretne választani magának. Hány darabot vegyen, ha átlagosan a legkevesebbet szeretne fizetni egy ingért?
b) Egy másik alkalommal az üzlet vezetősége két akció közül nem tudott választani, ezért a vásárlóikat kérdezték meg, hogy ők melyiket szeretnék. A beérkezett szavazatok alapján a következő két ajánlat között fognak dönteni: Egyik lehetőség: Aki két terméket vásárol, az olcsóbbat fél áron kapja. Másik lehetőség: Aki három terméket vásárol, a legolcsóbbat ingyen kapja. c) In one of the pieces there are five lions. Towards the second half of the piece only three of them remain on stage, which may be any three of the five. In how many different ways can the lions leave the circus ring at the end of the piece?
d) 10 identical apples are distributed among four numbered baskets for the performance’s elephant, which is given them as rewards throughout the play. How many different ways can the apples be distributed among the four baskets?
7. There is a new sale every week at the Suit Store in hopes of garnering the interest of shoppers.
a) One week it is announced that shoppers can buy their first shirt, which are usually 4990 HUF, at a price of 990 HUF. After the first shirt, for every shirt one buys at regular price, the next shirt comes at the discounted price of 990 HUF. According to the store’s clothing consultant, Betty, these shirts are high quality, which is why Leslie would like to buy more than one for himself. How many shirts should he buy if he hopes to pay as little as possible for a shirt, on average?
b) On a different occasion, the managers of the store cannot decide between two particular sales, so they instead ask the shoppers which one they would prefer. Based on the collected responses, they will decide between the two following options
Option 1: Buy two products, and receive the cheaper one at half price.
Option 2: Buy three products, and receive the cheapest one for free.
Leslie would like to purchase the following items: a suit that costs 39 990 HUF, a jacket for 27 990 HUF, a double-collared shirt for 6490 HUF, a leather belt for 3990 HUF, a silk handkerchief for 2990 HUF, and a corduroy sport coat for 29 990 HUF.
Based on the various ways these products can be paired off, determine the various possible amounts that Leslie would have to pay according to the sale described in option 1.
c) The first sale was selected by 2,103 of the shoppers, while the second one was only selected by 1,542 of them. Is this outcome desireable for Leslie?
How much money does Leslie lose or gain according to this sale, assuming the same products as in part b) Further, assume that for both sales Leslie knows how to group his items in the most cost-effective manner.
