Saint Nicholas Day - The Tradition
On the 6th of December, Saint Nicholas Day (Nikolaustag) is celebrated in Germany as well as in other countries. Saint Nicholas is traditionally accompanied by Knecht Ruprecht (Krampus in Austria), a servant with a rod. Well-behaved children would receive gingerbread, nuts, oranges and other small gifts from Saint Nicholas whereas misbehaving children ran the risk of being caned by Knecht Ruprecht's rod instead...pretty barbaric, if you ask me.
Traditionally, children in Germany find a platter full of goodies with a chocolate St Nicholas as a centrepiece in the morning. Many primary schools and nurseries are visited by St. Nicholas and Knecht Ruprecht around this time and the associated tales create an atmosphere of excitement and mild fear as the children wonder whether they have been good throughout the year.
Saint Nicholas Day Stammtisch
7 pm: Kick-off with a Glühwein at the German Christmas market on Princes Street (closes at 8 pm)
8 pm: The Cumberland Bar, 1-3 Cumberland Street, Edinburgh EH3 6RT, http://www.cumberlandbar.co.uk/
Please bring something 'xmassy' from your own country and some xmas decorations for the table in the pub, e.g. some candles, small xmas tree branches, a bit of tinsel, that sort of thing.

Hi Everyone
I'm really looking forward to Wednesday evening and hope the weather won't be as awful it was the last few nights. Please watch this space for last minute updates in that respect.
Other than that, I've booked a table for 12 under 'translators meeting' at the Cumberland Bar for 8 o'clock on Wednesday.
See you all on Wednesday!
Rebekka

A bit late for me
Dec 6, 2006
Hi guys, I was really looking forward to coming along but I would need to leave around 9.30 to get a train back to Glasgow on time to catch the last train home... I am wondering if it is going to be worth it for me, although as I said, I would love to see yous all. So, is anybody planning on going a bit earlier?

Thanks, Rebekka, for organising this, and thanks to all for making it such a fun evening. My apologies to those I didn't say goodbye to, but I had to rush to Princes St. in order not to miss the last bus home!! (it is a bit cold to spend the night on a bench by Waverley Station...). See you all in January!

Thanks everyone for the nice evening yesterday - Arianna, you missed some good fun, e.g. Graeme biting into this giant sprout he brought! Hope you can make it to one of our next meetings.
See you soon and have a lovely Christmas everyone! Marion
PS: I missed my last bus by 2 minutes...and decided to take a cab!
