treggia

The text refers to the use of this 'vehicle' in Italy. I was thinking of "travois" (used by the native Indians) as opposed to 'sled'. Any better ideas out there?

Discussion

Angela Erminia Newman (asker) Mar 14, 2007:
Have found exactly the same contraption described as a 'sledge' in "Travel in the Ancient World" by Lionel Casson, so I'm sticking with that. Thanks to Nedra and Caterina for their help!
Cheers, Angela
Nedra Rivera Huntington Mar 12, 2007:
I think travois is right, especially as the pieces come together at the front.
