Discussion

Lirka Mar 10, 2010:
as for 'incompetence': I think it is not suitable in case of cardiac valves... the usual standard EN term is 'regurgitation'. However, in case of veins one may say "valvular incompetence'. In any case, 'valvular' usually precedes it.
Lirka Mar 10, 2010:
instead of 'slight' [regurgitation], I'd use 'mild' or 'low-grade'
Suzanne Smart (X) (asker) Mar 10, 2010:
Thanks! I've put MR
Suzanne Smart (X) (asker) Mar 10, 2010:
Communque non importa perche metto "MI"!
Suzanne Smart (X) (asker) Mar 10, 2010:
Grazie a voi due, siete fantastiche! Pero io sono d'accorda con Emma - piu' possibile "mitral insufficiency".

LA/MR/AR

I'd just spell it out in the translation...

AS= left atrium
IM= mitral regurgitation
IAo= aortic regurgitation

please note that 'insufficiency' is not often used in English

neutral Lirka : LA/MR/AR...same as mitral regurgitation (MR). there's also the AR which stands for aortic regurgitation. "insufficiency" is rarely or not at all used in English!//Meaning ??:)

mea culpa...usually IM stands for myocardial infarction
....given the context, I would say too "mitral insufficiency" in this case

mitral insufficiency (MI) exists as diagnosis, see:
http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/medical/mitral_insufficiency_m...

However, MR is a valid option too, of course

mitral insufficiency
n. Abbr. MI
Incompetence of the mitral valve of the heart resulting in backflow of blood from the left ventricle to the left atrium. Also called mitral regurgitation.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Emma Drew : okay for left atrium and aortic insufficiency, but I would have thought that IM in that context would be more likely to be mitral insufficiency

yep, you might have right; please post it to have the right one in the glossary
disagree Lirka : ciao mihaela; sorry, but cannot agree on this one. MI is mitral regurgitation. they're describing both the mitral and the aortic valve...//I see. :)
