I reckon this is like your ordonnance de cloture in Fr. -> a guillotining or cutoff stage for pleadings. The noble judge then sets down a date for trial.
The phrase also looks a 'further and better particulars' hearing. However, what the litigants do between themselves in the UK is ask each other for clarification of the claim or defence. I don't know if an Ital. court can perform this function.
