chicco di caffè

they are sifting through the material for broken and fragmented bits of coffee. i'm getting confused between their "chicchi" and their "grani" (which i'll put up as another question). i've always understood coffee in terms of beans, granules and powder:

"L' obiettivo di questa analisi è quello di misurare la quantità di chicchi rotti e di frammenti di chicco presenti nel caffè tostato da commercializzare in grani".

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

grano di caffè is the same thing as chicco di caffè, just that when they're referred to collectively, as a product, it's often grani
Note from asker:
that's what i thought. great minds think alike.
BTW, like many people, i'm a lover of italian style coffee. but i recently bought a jar of nescafe in granules and i must say it DOES bring back memories.
Peer comment(s):

agree AeC2009 : correct..., though granule is more similar to powder..., I would say that a granule is a bean coarse ground, while the powder, of course, is fine ground...

the granules are also basically small lumps of instant coffee
agree Barbara Toffolon (X) : technically chicchi and grani are the same but for your translation the "chicchi" are plain beans...to be sold in "grani" i.e. whole beans... thats why none must be broken.... claro hombre?

coffee seed

as an alternative term if needed

n the Wet Process, the fruit covering the seeds/beans is removed before they are dried. Coffee processed by the wet method is called wet processed or washed coffee.[4] The wet method requires the use of specific equipment and substantial quantities of water.
