single failure
Hi Paul,
More than fault I think it's failure of a major component, if it's referring to redundant systems. We say these systems are "resistant to failure".

: Fault implies the failure of an external component/service too

It's a fine line, but a fault might permit operations to continue (albeit badly). With a failure there is no unambiguity. It's down, it's dead.

single fault
It means that the system has redundancy to overcome (ride through) a single fault condition and continue to operate normally.
Example sentence:
The standard has both mechanical and electrical requirements intended to reduce the electrical hazards both under normal and single fault conditions.

Can I just clarify that when I say fault I mean that the rig is able to operate even in the case of a single fault (intended as a fualt of a component) and not something which happens to the rig (like a shutdown or failure etc.)

Discussion
From the wikipedia article for "fault-tolerant system": "Fault-tolerance or graceful degradation is the property that enables a system (often computer-based) to continue operating properly in the event of the failure of (or one or more faults within) some of its components."
Note the subtle distinction made between failure and fault in this definition: "in the event of the failure of (or one or more faults within) some of its components".
In retrospect, I regret submitting my own answer; I should have just agreed with yours and tweaked "fault" to "failure". Won't happen again.
