This is from a quality management system procedure for activating internal services. Unfortunately I don't know much computing terminology so I'm lost with this one.

A seconda del tipo di richiesta, le UO preposte per le abilitazioni sono: IT Monitoring (macchina ponte), Database Administrator (utenza oracle/PL-SQL).

The client says that it has been translated elsewhere in their documents as 'gateway'. Could this be right?

..it could also refer to monitoring data from a 'car deck' if its a control system for a car park!

do you know what services are involved? It could be a 'network bridge' or other type (eg see <http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/internetworking/g/bldef_b... , but without more text, its impossible to judge - bridges conduct a preliminary assessment of incoming data and decide whether to foreward or discard it ..(in very general terms)
