Sowohl Schönberg[1] als auch Alban Berg lehnten diesen Begriff ab, weil sie ihn im Sinne von "ohne Töne" (statt "ohne Tonart") verstanden.[2] (u. A. in dem Radiodialog Was ist atonal?[3] von 1930).
